BAG-MASK VENTILATION TECHNIQUES
Bag-mask ventilation (BMV) is a fundamental skill in managing pediatric patients with respiratory failure or cardiac arrest. Proper technique ensures adequate oxygenation and ventilation until definitive airway management is established.
Steps for Effective BMV:
- Ensure a proper mask seal over the nose and mouth.
- Position the head using the head-tilt/chin-lift or jaw-thrust maneuver.
- Squeeze the bag gently, providing one breath every 2-3 seconds (20-30 breaths per minute) in infants and children.
- Monitor for visible chest rise to confirm adequate ventilation.
Common Challenges:
- Air Leaks: Ensure a tight seal to prevent air from escaping.
- Gastric Inflation: Use low tidal volumes to minimize air entering the stomach.
- Inadequate Ventilation: Reassess head position and mask fit if chest rise is insufficient.
BMV is a lifesaving technique that provides temporary respiratory support during emergencies.
